The Kaleidoscope of Culture: Architecture in Focus

During the last weekend, we witnessed the music magic in the open. The interests of our fellow citizens and positive reactions after the ‘Corso’ concert proved that culture lives in Novi Sad. The Kaleidoscope of Culture lasts for five weeks already and there is a numerous audience that follows different programmes implemented within this platform.

After theatre, comic book, classical and popular music, concerts at most unusual places, appearances of world famous guests, contemporary circus and street performances, the Kaleidoscope turns to architecture this week.

The Egység Cultural Station – the place of the Culture of Space

The Culture of Space Festival, organised by the Association of Architects of Novi Sad, that comprises a series of exhibitions, discussions and dialogues between architects and citizens, workshops and presentations will be held in the space of recently opened Egység Cultural Station from 21 until 23 September.

Citizens of Novi Sad will have a chance to see the contemporary architectural practice in the region within the exhibition of Slovenian contemporary architecture during the first day of Festival.

The second day will be dedicated to the ‘New Places’ exhibition, according to the project of the same name of the ‘Novi Sad 2021’ Foundation within which, citizens participate in creation of new spaces in Novi Sad through the several levels of involvement. This exhibition will present concrete solutions the urban-design call for designing small public spaces received. The call lasted from 18 May until 1 July.

The ‘New Places’ project is a unique evidence that the culture of space begin to thrive in Novi Sad. We witnessed the adaptation of the Suburbium of the Petrovaradin Fortess after 300 years. At the same time, the Svilara, an object significant for the industrial heritage of the city, is being turned into new cultural station after 200 years. Novi Sad gets the city concert hall for the first time, and Music School gets permanent residence after 100 years.

In addition to this, the Liberty Square gets the new appearance after 70 years. This will be the topic of the third day of the Culture of Space Festival that will present received works for improvement of the central city core through the ‘Central Squares of Novi Sad’ exhibition, while discussions with architects and citizens will be organised in order to find the best solutions, acknowledging suggestions of citizens.

Spaces will be in the focus as well, but in a different way, on 22 September. Within the ‘We Discover Almaš Yards’ event, citizens of Novi Sad will have a chance to peek through the closed gates of old houses in the Almaš Neighbourhood in order to initiate the story of heritage of the old core of Novi Sad, therefore, to fulfil these yards with cultural and artistic contents as a unique chance for citizens to see these specific micro environments.

Besides topics dedicated to the culture of space, the Kaleidoscope will present really interesting programmes these days. The ‘Allstars Riso’ is the exhibition of graphic works of ‘stars’ of design and illustrations that will be held in the Lab Cultural Centre on Friday, 21 September. The exhibition commemorates 10 years of the PDP Creative Media Conference, and the youngest citizens of Novi Sad are invited to the premiere of the ‘Magic Flute’ children’s opera from 11 a.m. in the Egység cultural station.
