Musical Kaleidoscope at the Opening of the Kaleidoscope of Culture

In the title year of the European Capital of Culture, the Kaleidoscope of Culture will be held for the fifth time, from 1 September to 7 October. Throughout Novi Sad, almost 1,000 artists and experts in the fields of architecture, literature, visual, performing and applied arts from 67 countries will implement more than 250 events.

During the four-day opening alone, taking place from 1 to 4 September, in the area of the District, one of the most important infrastructure projects of Novi Sad as the European Capital of Culture, over a hundred events will be held, including a whole series of musical performances to remember.

First Day of the Opening / 1 September

On the first day of the opening of the Kaleidoscope of Culture, the European Capital of Culture will present the young Novi Sad DJ Filip Grujić and the Vladimir Samardžić Trio with drummer Vladimir Kostadinović on Music Stage 2.

Second Day of the Opening / 2 September

On the second day of the opening, 2 September, on Music Stage 1 we will see Hercules and Love Affair, whose big hit Blind was the song of the year according to the American music magazine and portal Pitchfork. Hercules and Love Affair is the musical project of the American DJ, singer, composer and producer Andy Butler, a band that was formed in 2004 and performs house, disco, techno and new-disco music. Their performance will be preceded by a concert by the famous Finnish quartet Apocalyptica, which has been showing, since 1993, how excellent metal music can also be played on cellos.

On the same day, on Music Stage 2, we will watch the music-dance performance ‘Mirrors’, which combines dance and the sounds of jazz and Roma-swing music. We will listen to a concert of contemporary percussion art music ‘The New Face of Percussion’, during which marimba, vibraphone and sets of combined percussion (drums, bongos, big drum, etc.) will be used. It will be followed by a concert-performance by the band Dragon’s Fuel, one of the most respectable bands under the auspices of HORZ, made up of renowned musicians from Novi Sad who nurture the so-called European school of jazz in fusion with Balkan rhythms. Then DJ Zakiri and DJ Traumer will perform, bringing hypnotic performances and music straight from the Parisian underground.

Third Day of the Opening / 3 September

On the third day, the synthpop duo from Croatia, Pocket Palma, will perform on Music Stage 1. After a very successful debut album, in 2021 the band presented the album Atomi, which cemented their place on the regional scene with its maturity. Following that, on Music Stage 1, the beats of the famous single Ready to Go by the English alternative band Republica will be heard too. The peak of their popularity lasted from 1996 to 1999, and they reunited in 2008. The current line-up consists of Saffron (vocals), Tim Dorney (keyboards), Johnny Male (guitar), and Conor Lawrence (drums).

On the same evening, Carbon Based Lifeforms (CBL), a Swedish electronic duo known on the ambient psytrance scene, will perform in Liman Park. Along with CBL, the well-known local DJ Brka will join with his mixing console, followed by Burning Stone (fire show), and then Tapan.

On Music Stage 2, we will listen to Tidal Pull, the founders of the big indie genre who ‘play in English and sing in Croatian’, the Novi Sad rock duo, Short Reports, and the Belgrade band VROOOM.

Fourth Day of the Opening / 4 September

On the fourth day of the opening of the Kaleidoscope of Culture, the European Capital of Culture will present the legendary composer and performer Boris Kovač on Music Stage 1. His work, which lies between the chamber and world music, is deeply contemporary and timeless at the same time, with an authentic undertone of the traditional music of Southeast Europe and with a lot of room for personal creativity. Boris is a restless author and performer, and this is a unique opportunity to hear his greatest works in one concert, together with fresh compositions that are part of his latest project ‘New Ritual Quartet’.

On Music Stage 1 LP Duo will premiere new original compositions created within the artistic and scientific project Beyond Quantum Music and during the residency at the Delft University of Technology (Netherlands), when Sonja Lončar and Andrija Pavlović collaborated with leading quantum physicists and microbiologists from around the world, including scientists from the universities of Oxford and Copenhagen. The LP Duo will perform the sounds of quantum computers, moving atoms and genetic code under the guise of an already recognisable musical language on innovative instruments – Duality hybrid pianos.

On Music Stage 2, starting in the afternoon DJ Vukašin Vojvodić, DJ Voja Killo Killo, Prisoners of Surprise and Fusion Masters will perform in this order.
