Despite the bad weather last weekend, the seventh Kaleidoscope of Culture in Novi Sad attracted an audience to Tišma’s Pavilion, which marked the second week, dedicated to literature, of one of the most significant artistic events in this part of Europe. Now, the programme for the third week, dedicated to performing arts, has been announced.
The star of this week will be Ibrahim Maalouf, one of the most prominent trumpeters of today. This French-Lebanese instrumentalist and Grammy-nominated composer, after sold-out concerts at France’s largest concert hall, Accor Arena, New York’s Carnegie Hall, and Paris’ Olympia, will perform in Novi Sad’s District on the large open-air stage on Saturday, 21 September, at 8:30 p.m. Admission to the concert is free, and no reservations or sign-ups are required. Entry will be possible only from Despota Stefana Boulevard 5, near the Fabrika facility.
The day before, on 20 September, as part of the Performing Arts Week, the audience will have the opportunity to see the dance performance ‘Bark,’ inspired by the novel Faith and Treason by Aleksandar Tišma. It will be performed on the large open-air stage in the District by dancers from the ‘Vuk Karadžić’ Artistic Association from Temerin, starting at 9 p.m.
On the same evening, at SCCNS Fabrika, at 7 p.m., there will be a performance of Democracy, directed by Veljko Mićunović. The play, by Belgrade Drama Theatre, was created in co-production with Novi Sad Theatre (Újvidéki Színház).
In line with Novi Sad’s membership in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in 2023, the multimedia project ‘guitARevolution’ will present the audience with contemporary guitar art in completely new augmented reality frameworks. Visitors will be able to see this performance at 8 p.m. in the District, at the Biro facility.
For the second year in a row, a Pritzker Prize winner in Architecture Week
In the Architecture Week, this year’s Kaleidoscope of Culture will once again host a Pritzker Prize winner, the Nobel equivalent in the field of architecture. Japanese architect Riken Yamamoto received the most prestigious award for his projects aimed at fostering community and connecting people by blurring the boundaries between public and private spaces. Over his five-decade-long career, he has built numerous private homes, residential projects, schools, university campuses, museums, and even a fire station.
The multi-award-winning Japanese architect Riken Yamamoto will give a lecture in the District on Saturday, 28 September, at 8:30 p.m.
The Black Wave closes the seventh Kaleidoscope of Culture
The seventh edition of Kaleidoscope of Culture will dedicate its final, fifth week to visual arts. In the grand finale of the seventh Kaleidoscope of Culture, on 4 and 5 in the District, the exhibition ‘The Blackest Wave’ will be opened. This event offers a retrospective of the works of the most important directors of this period, including Dušan Makavejev, Želimir Žilnik, Aleksandar Petrović, Živojin Pavlović, and Lazar Stojanović.
The programme will include spatial video installations in the exhibition space, which will highlight key topics and aesthetics of the ‘Black Wave’ through innovative presentations, along with film screenings where selected films will be shown in full, accompanied by panel discussions with experts. Films to be screened include I Even Met Happy Gipses, Plastic Jesus, and When I Am Dead and Gone.
The workshop and exhibition ‘Analog Me, Digital Me’ will take place in the District on 4 and 5 October at 7 p.m. This video art workshop questions identity by asking what makes us ‘natural’ in the analog world versus the digital world.
The Visual Arts Week will also include the ‘Bio Awaking’ project, which will introduce visitors to the world of innovative bio art and biotechnology, culminating on 4 October. These activities will offer visitors a unique opportunity to participate in interactive workshops, gain new knowledge about biotechnological techniques, and explore the boundaries between art and science.
