The seventh Kaleidoscope of Culture in Novi Sad has completed its fourth week, dedicated to architecture, with every seat taken at the Serbian National Theatre, where over a thousand attendees listened to a lecture by Japanese architect Riken Yamamoto. Now, one of the most important artistic festivals is entering its finale.
The Visual Arts Week, on 4 and 5 October, will be entirely dedicated to the Black Wave, one of the most significant artistic and social phenomena on the Yugoslav cultural scene. Through exhibitions, film screenings, and talks, the last week of the Kaleidoscope of Culture explores the impact of the Black Wave on contemporary art.
The Black Wave Closes This Year’s Kaleidoscope of Culture
The leading programme of the Visual Arts Week will be the exhibition ’The Darkest Wave.’ The exhibition presents a retrospective of works by the most prominent directors of this period, including Dušan Makavejev, Želimir Žilnik, Aleksandar Petrović, Karpo Ačimović Godina, Živojin Pavlović, and Lazar Stojanović, combining artistic interpretation with archival and artistic documents of an era to create context for understanding the controversial period of Yugoslav cinema in the 1960s and 1970s. The goal is to provide the audience with a new perspective on these works through appropriation art and postproduction art. ’The Darkest Wave” exhibition will feature spatial video installations in Radionica, Kantina, and Biro, which will highlight key topics and aesthetics of the ’Black Wave’ through innovative presentations. The exhibition will open on Saturday, 5 October, at 8:30 p.m. During the ’The Darkest Wave’ exhibition, the audience will have the opportunity to hear an expert and critical examination of the Black Wave and the exhibition itself by visual artist Uroš Đurić, on Sunday, 6 October, at 6 p.m. and the following Saturday, 12 October, at 7 p.m.
On both evenings, film critic Zoran Janković will host discussions with guests. On Friday, 4 October, the audience will have the chance to listen to Milan Nikodijević, Nebojša Pajkić, and Veljko Radosavljević, while on Saturday, 5 October, the guest will be Želimir Žilnik. Both discussions will take place at OPENS, starting at 7:30 p.m.
As part of the accompanying programme on 4 and 5 October, film screenings will be held, where selected films will be shown. On Friday at OPENS, visitors can watch the films ’WR: Mysteries of the Organism’ at 6 p.m., ’When I Am Dead and Gone” at 9 p.m., and ’ I Even Met Happy Gypses’ at 10:30 p.m.
On Saturday, at the same venue, the films ’About Love Skills” at 6 p.m., ’Early Works’ at 6:15 p.m., ’Forbidden Without a Ban’ at 10:30 p.m., and ’Plastic Jesu’” at 11:30 p.m. will be shown.
Visual Arts Week Brings Another Exhibition, Installation, and Workshop
As part of the Visual Arts Week of the Kaleidoscope of Culture, the exhibition ’Analog Me, Digital Me’ will be held. This video art exhibition raises questions about identity, asking what makes us who we are in the analog world versus the digital world. The exhibition will feature works created during workshops in which participants used personal archives, recorded, and found video materials to create their own works, presenting either who they truly are or who they wish to be. The ’Analog Me, Digital Me’ exhibition will be held in the District, on 4 and 5 October from 7 p.m.
The project ’Halopartizanke’ represents a choreographic installation for four human and four holographic dancers and is divided across two floors. The lower floor, the central part of the installation, uses outdated 20th-century technology to project holograms via televisions, while the upper floor, symbolizing the future, displays holograms via mobile devices. The opening will also feature a live performance. On the upper floor, there will be a special room dedicated to female partisans, showing documentary material about the brave female warriors who participated in the liberation of Yugoslavia from Nazism. The choreographic installation ’Halopartizanke’ will be held in the Radionica facilita in the District on 4 and 5 October from 7 p.m.
Visual Arts Week will also include the ’Bio Awaking’ project, which will introduce us to the world of innovative bio art and biotechnology, culminating on 4 October. These activities will provide visitors with a unique opportunity to participate in interactive workshops, gain new knowledge about biotechnological techniques, and explore the boundaries between art and science.
